More than a school program, The Riff is a creative development opportunity for emerging artists. The Riff 2027 “Sign of the Times” is a 10-week devised theatre project for Western Sydney high school students.
What does it mean to be young right now? With this theme we invite the next generation of theatre-makers to explore the ideas, questions and stories shaping their world including identity, culture, technology, belonging, climate, community, hope and the future.
Across 10 weeks, participants will collaborate with professional theatre artists to devise an original performance inspired by the issues and experiences that define their generation. In an exciting creative process, students will experiment with performance, movement, improvisation, writing and ensemble-making, developing original material that reflects their unique voices and perspectives.
Designed for curious and creative Western Sydney High School drama students, The Riff is an opportunity to take on a creative challenge, build confidence, connect with like-minded performers and experience the collaborative process of creating new theatre from the ground up.
Over 10 weeks you’ll:
- Collaborate with professional theatre practitioners
- Devise and create original performance work
- Develop acting, improvisation and ensemble skills
- Explore contemporary themes through theatre
- Build confidence, creativity and performance experience
- Rehearse towards a public performance
The project culminates in public performances in early April 2027, where participants will premiere The Riff “Sign of the Times” for family, friends, peers and the wider community.
