Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) is thrilled to announce that Saplings by Hannah Belanszky has been selected for the 2027 NSW HSC Drama syllabus.
Originally co-produced by ATYP, Saplings joins Yve Blake’s Fangirls on the newly released prescriptions list, marking a significant milestone for contemporary Australian theatre and for the next generation of drama students.
Written by Yuwaalaraay playwright Hannah Belanszky, Saplings is a powerful and deeply moving work inspired by real stories shared by young people who have experienced the youth justice system. Through humour, honesty and an original hip-hop score, the play offers an authentic and compassionate exploration of resilience, connection and the lives of young people navigating complex circumstances.
The inclusion of Saplings in the HSC Drama syllabus recognises the importance of contemporary Australian voices in the classroom and provides students with the opportunity to engage with a work that reflects the experiences, challenges and aspirations of young people today.
The announcement comes as Saplings continues its national tour, introducing audiences across Australia to this award-winning production. Since its premiere, the work has been widely praised for its innovative storytelling and its ability to foster empathy and meaningful conversations about youth justice. The production was developed through extensive workshops with young people who have lived experience of the youth justice system, ensuring their voices remain at the heart of the work.
ATYP is incredibly proud to see both Saplings and Fangirls recognised on the 2027 HSC Drama syllabus. As Australia’s national youth theatre company, ATYP is committed to championing new Australian writing and creating opportunities for young people to see their stories reflected on stage. Having two ATYP co-productions included in the curriculum is a testament to the quality and impact of Australian theatre created with and for young people.
