I Want to Know What Love Is

Joyous. Sexy. Heartbreaking. Take a dizzying ride through love’s collision course.

Around the world, people love. They sing for love, they dance for love, they compose poems and stories about love. They tell myths and legends about love. They pine for love, they live for love, they kill for love, and they die for love.

Anthropologists have found evidence of romantic love in 170 societies. They’ve never found a society that did not have it. Helen Fisher, The Brain In Love

I Want To Know What Love Is throws a spotlight on long-buried memories, bedroom fantasies, crushes and conquests. Acclaimed Queensland performance collective The Good Room asked members of the public to anonymously submit their stories of love – fragments and memories, confessions and admissions – and they’ve transformed those secret submissions into magnificent declarations centre stage.

Submission #87: “It’s been years, but I still think of you and wonder ‘What could have been?’”
Submission #346: “I choose to say it did not fail. It just finished.”
Submission #302: “Jemma forever xo”

Following a sold-out premiere season in Brisbane Festival 2014 with Queensland Theatre, the work had a subsequent sold-out return at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Wonderland Festival in 2015, and a Melbourne season at Provocare Festival in 2017. This thrilling production is on national tour in 2019.

This is for everyone who’s ever loved. Anyone who’s ever hurt. This is for you.

Audience Advice: Ages 16+ (adult content). This production contains coarse language, sexual references, loud music and sound effects, haze and a complete blackout.

WE WANT YOUR LOVE

SHARE, DECLARE, CONFESS, CONSIDER

In 2014, The Good Room made a performance work about love based on the stories and experiences of real people – like you. Now, in 2019, they are bringing this work to The Joan and are looking for new submissions to add into the mix.

The goal – then and now – is to try and show love as it is; with all its warts and roses, in all its bittersweet and cringe-worthy glory.

We invite you to share, declare, confess, consider:

What have you done for love?
Is yours the greatest love story (n)ever told?
Who, or what, do/did you love? Why?
Is love science or poetry?
What does love look/smell/taste like?
What is the ultimate love song or lyric?
Was there ever a time when love just wasn’t enough …

Short and sweet, lengthy or sour, we want to hear from you. Pen that love letter. Write the telephone conversation you can’t have. Whisper that secret moment (you know the one). Or maybe just tell us their name.

By CLICKING HERE TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES you give us permission to publicly share your response; to air your stories, hold your hand, pass the tissues and witness each of your most-fleeting or infinite moments of love.

All submissions are anonymous and treated with care.
